Most Awesome E-Scooters on the Market
Who knew scooters are going to be back in style? With gas prices on the rise and climate change taking up a lot of headspace, people have taken to revolutionizing the old for a better future. We’re talking about electric scooters, which have become extraordinarily popular across the globe within the past few years.
What is it that makes a scooter an electric scooter? Well, the traditional scooter - also called the kick scooter because it requires you to push yourself off the ground in order to catch speed - is composed of a deck, wheels, and a handlebar. Can you guess what it is that the e-scooter has extra? That’s right. A motor.
Electric scooters are estimated to be roughly five times faster than walking on foot, which makes your morning commute to work a bonafide breeze. Literally! If you aim for a top-speed trip, then the wind is going to whip past your face and leave your hair looking like you’ve stuck a fork in a power outlet. E-scooters can go pretty fast!
If you’re curious about purchasing an electric scooter, then you’re in luck. We’ve made an effort to give you all the information you require so that you can make an educated decision when buying your first (or newest!) e-scooter.
There’s a lot of factors to consider when trying to decide what model to go for. It very much depends on what you want, as some e-scooters are faster than others, or lighter, or can run for a longer period of time. Striking a balance is always a good idea, though you might want to opt for a more specialized model instead.
Why Should I Buy an E-Scooter?
Because they’re cool? Jokes aside, the aesthetic of scooters is not the reason people go for them. Truth is that they’re very, very convenient, especially since city life can get very congested. You know how it is to be stuck in traffic for what seems like hours on end.
The electric scooter is a quick way of completely eliminating any transportation worries. Traffic jam up ahead? No problem. Your scooter can weave between cars with so much ease you’ll wonder why you even put yourself through existing without one in the first place.
They don’t require much training or dexterity and would be a great fit for all ages, regardless of physical condition. A kick scooter might require you to push yourself to your destination until your legs go numb and muscle fever settles in. An electric scooter? Get on it, grab your handlebars, and fly away!
Consider this, as well. If you have a car, then you probably pay a lot when it comes to refueling. E-scooters don’t need fossil fuel to function, instead being charged with electricity. Plug it into a power outlet and forget about it - just like you would a phone.
Oh, and talking about cars… did we mention no parking fee? Who is going to charge you to park your thin, wiry, lightweight scooter? Absolutely nobody, which is a fact you can take advantage of. Ditch the parking meter, ditch the stress!
If you’re thinking about getting yourself a car, by the way, then maybe don’t. E-scooters are much cheaper both when purchased and in the long run, since they don’t require much maintenance. Worrying about the speed limit is also an experience you can forget about, since most e-scooters aren’t fast enough to break past them.
One last thing: an electric scooter keeps you sweat-free. Going to work early in the morning on a bike is fun and all, but your stylish, professional dress shirt is probably going to get soaked in sweat by the time you slide in past the lobby doors. How about you don’t sweat at all by opting for an e-scooter? Truly, we’re living in the future.
Can I Use My Electric Scooter on the Road?
It depends! If you’re in the United States, then most likely yes, depending on what state you’re in. E-scooters don’t reach high speeds and thus fall well under the speed limit of most areas, meaning that you can use them on the road, albeit with care.
Keep in mind, however, that each state has its own laws and regulations. What might be legal in one state might land you in jail in another, and not knowing is not an excuse. The general rule of thumb is that riding your e-scooter on the road is legal as long as you don’t exceed 20 miles per hour.
Even though e-scooters are street legal in the US, other countries have taken to banning them to some extent. In the United Kingdom, for example, an e-scooter is considered a Personal Light Electric Vehicle (PLEV), which means that it is essentially the same as a bike.
The issue is that e-scooters don’t have rear lights or number plates, which means that they theoretically cannot be used on roads. They eventually became street legal on the 4th of July in 2020, however, and the UK has since been experiencing a surge in e-scooters that might eventually catch up with the Boris bike phenomenon.
